Bringing Communities Together at The Vetch

A community action day in Swansea’s Sandfields and Brunswick neighbourhoods brought local people together to celebrate green spaces, share ideas and take action to improve their neighbourhoods.

Creating better places starts with listening to the people who live there.

Over the past few years, Urban Foundry has engaged with more than 500 people across Sandfields and Brunswick, gathering views on improvements to local green spaces and exploring what residents would like to see happen next.

From new green spaces around St Helen’s School, Fleet Street, Rodney Street and Phillips Parade to proposals for St Helen’s Road, local people have played an important role in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods.

And while feedback on the improvements has been positive, residents have also told us they want more opportunities to get involved, more community activities and better communication about what’s happening locally.

Turning Conversations into Community Action

To help build on that feedback, our team organised a Community Action Day at The Vetch Park, bringing residents together to celebrate their neighbourhood, share ideas and explore ways to get involved.

Despite some unpredictable weather, the event attracted local people keen to take part, connect with others and have their say on the area’s green spaces.

It was also an opportunity to strengthen community connections and encourage people to take an active role in looking after the places around them.

And yes, there was even a giant seagull making an appearance!

Small Actions, Lasting Impact

One of the positive outcomes from the day was the introduction of a new fortnightly community litter pick, giving residents a regular opportunity to come together and help care for their neighbourhood.

It’s a simple but important example of how listening to communities can lead to practical action.

At Urban Foundry, we believe that successful regeneration is about more than improving physical spaces. It’s about creating opportunities for people to connect, take ownership and play an active part in shaping their communities.

By continuing to work alongside residents in Sandfields and Brunswick, we’re helping build on the improvements already made and support a stronger sense of community pride.

A big thank you to everyone who came along and got involved, and to our team members Kate McCabe and Tatiana Bodnar for organising the event.

Delivered in partnership with Wates Family Enterprise Trust, Natural Resources Wales, Swansea Council, Keep Wales Tidy and Butterfly Conservation.
