Green the City
Case Study
Bringing nature back into urban spaces.
OUR IMPACT
Green the City brings people, organisations and communities together to make Swansea greener, healthier and better prepared for the impacts of climate change.
Working with Swansea Council, Natural Resources Wales, Wates Family Enterprise Trust and other partners, we’ve combined practical projects with training, events and community involvement – helping people understand how greener urban spaces can benefit people, nature and the wider environment.
THE IMPACT
Participants have included residents, schoolchildren, contractors, architects and organisations from across the city and beyond.
GREENER STREETS, SHAPED WITH THE COMMUNITY
Sandfields, Swansea
New rain gardens have been created across Sandfields, including at St Helen’s Primary School, Burrows Road, Fleet Street, Rodney Street and Phillips Parade.
Urban Foundry helped make sure local residents, businesses and schoolchildren were involved in shaping the designs and had opportunities to understand what the rain gardens do and why they matter.
The result is more than new planting. These spaces are designed to bring nature into the community, help manage rainwater naturally and create greener, more welcoming streets.
WHY RAIN GARDENS MATTER
FOR PEOPLE
Greener, more welcoming places that can support wellbeing and help cool our streets during warmer weather.
FOR NATURE
More places for plants, insects and wildlife to live and thrive within our towns and cities.
FOR WATER
Helping to catch and slow rainwater before it reaches drains, while naturally filtering water from our streets and roads.
GREENER PLACES. STRONGER COMMUNITIES. A MORE RESILIENT CITY.
Green the City shows what can happen when practical action, local knowledge and community involvement come together – creating greener urban spaces while building the skills and understanding needed to look after them for the future.
